YOUTH SPORTS ABUSE

Combating Sexual Abuse in Youth Sports

Participation in youth sports is often seen as a positive, enjoyable, and social activity, encouraged by parents nationwide. While parents hope their children will have rewarding experiences through sports, a growing number of sexual assault reports involving adults in sports-related settings has raised significant concerns.

Sexual abuse in sports knows no boundaries; adult perpetrators may target boys or girls of any age, in both recreational and competitive sports, whether in public or private sectors. Abuse can take place “on-site” (such as at a school) or “off-site” (like a training facility or independently run sports programs).

Authority Figures Exploit Trust

This type of abuse often involves direct sexual contact, such as groping, fondling, or penetration. However, non-physical misconduct is also common, including inappropriate sexual language, coercion into sexual acts, exposure to pornography, and indecent exposure. Perpetrators often hold positions of authority, including:

  • Coaches
  • Volunteers
  • Assistants
  • Trainers
  • Team medical staff
  • Gym supervisors or owners

The trust, authority, and influence these individuals hold make it even more difficult for victims to come forward. Additionally, parents may initially place the same trust in these individuals, further complicating the issue.
