Institutional Abuse
Rising Incidents of Institutional Sexual Abuse
Claims of sexual abuse within major institutions across the United States are increasing at an alarming rate. Institutional sexual abuse occurs when an employee or representative of an institution sexually assaults a student, patient, resident, or inmate. These acts can include sexual violence, rape, inappropriate sexual comments, indecent exposure, or the unwelcome sharing of sexual content (such as photos, videos, emails, and texts).
Abuse of Power in Institutional Settings
Abusers in these institutions are often in positions of power and authority—such as professors, doctors, or clergy members. They use the respect and authority associated with their roles to exploit, betray, and manipulate their victims. Below are two notable examples of recognized institutional abuse.
